Probiotics’ Effects on Weight
We still don’t fully understand how probiotics alter body weight and abdominal fat.
Through the formation of the short-chain fatty acids acetate, propionate, and butyrate, probiotics appear to regulate hunger and caloric metabolism.
The amount of fat expelled with feces is hypothesized to increase as a result of the theory that some probiotics may prevent the absorption of dietary fat.
They, therefore, cause your body to “extract” less calories from the meals you consume.
It has been discovered that some bacteria, including members of the Lactobacillus family, behave in this way.
Other methods that probiotics may combat obesity include:
1. Releases hormones that control appetite:
The hormones glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and peptide, which suppress hunger, may be released with the help of probiotics. Having higher amounts of these appetite suppressing hormones may aid in fat and calorie burning.
2. Elevates the concentration of proteins that control fat:
Angiopoietin-like 4 protein levels may rise in response to probiotics. This might result in less fat being stored.

Some studies have indeed pointed to some probiotic strains possibly contributing to weight gain and obesity.
One recent review found that the effects of probiotics on body weight vary depending on the species and strain used.
Unfortunately, according to Carolyn Apowian, the handful of studies done to date do not provide any real evidence on which strains of probiotics may be best at producing weight-loss results.
The most promising evidence on probiotics and weight loss comes from a 2018 study in The NCBI, which looked at “Probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics for weight loss and metabolic syndrome in the microbiome era” conducted by R Ferrarese and colleagues.
The research reported that Diet supplementation with probiotics such as Lactobacillus gasseri strains showed significant weight loss and anti-inflammatory activity in large independent studies. Show Source Texts
Another potential promising probiotic for weight loss is bifidobacterium, and a study showed that individuals taking a single strain of Bifidobacterium for three months lost more abdominal fat and reduced their BMI and waist size (compared to a control group taking a placebo).
Caroline Apovian added that, although it is certainly possible a probiotic-filled, healthy gut might be more receptive to weight loss or maintaining weight, this may also depend on a different type of causation. Show Source Texts
