Cracked heels: Causes and remedies

Cracked heels: causes and remediesCracked heels are characterized by thickened, dry and wavy cracks down the foot pad. It’s almost tough to wash off dirt from a cracked heel especially if it’s deep and even gets worse at dry or cold seasons. Most times, heel cracks are ascribed to dry skin and skin moisture deficiencies amidst others.

Meanwhile, dry skin occurs when there is low moisture control on the first layer of your skin called the epidermis. This subsequently results in a certain reaction on the skin heightened by environmental conditions, skin irritation and poor skin moisture. It occurs in various parts of the body- the lips, back, knee, limbs and of course the heels. Although dry skin is one of the obvious causes of cracked heels, there are other significant causes of heel cracks which we are going to talk about here and now.

Causes of Cracked heels

Weight

Usually, when we walk, the feet pads get grips on the ground or your footwears by expanding the feet muscles and subsequently regaining balance when lifted. When this happens on thick, dry feet, it is bound to crack. Often begins small and eats deep and wider if not handled closely.

Cold and dry weather

Severe cold weather conditions, often accompanied by dusty dry winds don’t seem to be friendly to the heels; not to the skin either. Affected persons get to shred off old skin especially the lips, knee cap, and the heel pad. This condition, especially very severe ones dries up the moisture content on the heel and still expects more; where this need is not met, your heel is likely to pay for starving the weather of thirst with a crack or two.

Aside dry seasons, people who enjoy walking barefoot, no matter what season it is are likely to be victims of cracked feet. You know why? Dirt and germs that linger on your feet for too long can make it vulnerable for cracks.

Poor skin humidity

Bathing several times daily without using body lotion can cause dry and crackly heels especially if you haven’t enough to eat healthily. Otherwise, the use of non-soothing creams during dry seasons can result to dry skin irritation.

Meanwhile, the moisture on your skin could either come from the healthy fats from inside your body or the lotions you apply externally; both ought to complement each other for better skin results. However, when either of these two is lacking or none at all, it’s not going to be funny at all.

 Bad walking conducts

The same way you scuff your footwear on the floor while walking is exactly the same way you would if you walk barefoot. Even at that, the pattern at which you shoe or slippers wears off its edges explains your walking pattern and conduct. It happens sometimes that the heel edges serve as pillars instead of gaining full balance with the foot pad- that’s certainly not right. Doing this lays so many burdens on the foot edges and can result in cracks with time.

Standing firm with the foot pad can be learned or natural; a little more practice will help if you are already caught in this web.
