Possible effects associated with caffeine are headaches, migraines, and even high blood pressure in some individuals.
Too much caffeine has shown to increase chances of miscarriages in pregnant women. Advisably pregnant women reduce their intake of yerba mate tea to three cups daily.
2. Yerba Mate Drug Interactions
Some of the major Yerba mate –drug interactions are:
Yerba mate with Stimulant Drugs: Stimulant drugs such as amphetamines, cocaine and ephedrine stimulate the nervous system. This effect causes jittery and increases heart rate.

Drinking yerba mate tea with stimulant drugs may lead to major problems like high blood pressure and increased heart rate.

Avoid Yerba mate or any caffeine containing products a day before doing your cardiac stress test.
Yerba mate with Quinolone antibiotics: When caffeine or caffeinated drinks are taken into the body , the body breaks down the caffeine and excrete it.
Antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, enoxacin, trovafloxacin, grepafloxacin and sparfloxacin lowers the rate at which the body breaks down caffeine.
Therefore drinking Yerba mate together with quinolones may increase caffeine side effects such as headaches, migraines, high blood pressure and jitteriness.

Yerba mate with Alcohol: Alcohol decreases the body’s metabolism of caffeine which might cause high levels of caffeine concentration in the blood resulting in enhanced caffeine related side effects such as increased heartbeat, jittery and headache.
Much other medications work by decreasing the rate at which the body breaks down caffeine and gets rid of it, these medications cause elevated levels of caffeine in the blood stream which might lead to caffeine related side effects.
Examples of these medications include fluconazole, contraceptive pills, and verapamil.
3. Potentially Increased Risk of Digestive and Respiratory Cancer
Some Studies revealed that there is a higher risk of developing cancer of the respiratory and digestive tract when Yerba mate is taken in large amounts for many years.
